UAE gains AMRAAM go-ahead

THE US GOVERNMENT is to release the Hughes AIM-120 Advanced Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support its manufacturers in the country's strike-fighter competition.
Sources close to the UAE fighter programme claim that the USA decided in July to make it clear to the UAE that the AIM-120 would be available were it to select a US aircraft to meet its requirement for up to 80 strike-fighter aircraft.
The active-radar-guided AIM-120 has not yet officially been cleared for any of the states in the Middle East region, including Saudi Arabia or Israel.
The release of the AMRAAM beyond-visual-range missile is a key issue, according to US fighter manufacturers involved in the competition. McDonnell Douglas is offering the F-15U, a derivative of the F-15E, while Lockheed Martin is pushing the F-16C/D Block 50 as well as the F-16ES.
Other competitors include France, offering the Mirage 2000-5 and the Rafale, while British Aerospace is pursuing the deal with a Panavia Tornado GR1 leasing offer coupled to a latter purchase of the Eurofighter EF2000. Russia's Sukhoi offer is based on the Su-27 Flanker while MiG-MAPO is still trying to interest the UAE in variants of the MiG-29 Fulcrum
.
France is willing to release the active-radar variant of the Matra Mica for the UAE and Russia's Vympel design bureau is offering the export variant of the R-77 (AA-12 Adder), effectively for any platform. Unwillingness to release the AIM-120 would considerably damage the chances of a US manufacturer winning the lucrative order.
Hughes will not confirm officially that the AMRAAM was to be made available to the UAE, saying only that it believed that the US Government "...would seriously consider approving AMRAAM for delivery with the aircraft", if a US aircraft were chosen.
Along with the release of the AIM-120 to the UAE, the USA is also expected to offer the missile, to Saudi Arabia and Israel.
The Royal Saudi Air Force's (RSAF) purchase of the F-15S included in the letter of acceptance the option for the provision of the Raytheon AIM-7F. The RSAF, however, is not taking up on this option.
The UAE is likely to decide on a fighter early early in 1996.

DUBAI: Boeing throws F-15, F/A-18 into UAE fighter modernisation mix

  • DUBAI
A top Boeing executive has added a new piece to the UAE's fighter modernisation puzzle, saying that the US government has delivered classified briefings about the capabilities of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Neither aircraft has been mentioned in the past as among the options for replacing the UAE air force's fleet of Dassault Mirage 2000-9s. The UAE has been negotiating with France for the Dassault Rafale since 2008, and within the last two weeks asked the Eurofighter Typhoon to submit a rival bid.

But UAE officials are still casting an even wider net as they consider all of their fighter modernisation requirements, said Jeff Kohler, Boeing vice-president of military business development.

getAsset.aspx
In August or September, the UAE formally requested classified briefings on the F-15 and F/A-18, Kohler said, which the US government obliged.
The briefings were not followed by the issuing of a request for proposals from Boeing, as Eurofighter has received. However, Kohler believes the UAE's interests in the Boeing fighters may be aimed at long-term requirements.
On 12 November, the UAE air force announced plans to acquire a "next generation fighter" in the 2018-2025 timeframe.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 joint strike fighter (JSF) has been previously named by the UAE as a potential acquisition target. But briefing requests may indicate that the F/A-18E/F and the F-15 Silent Eagle are also in the discussion, Kohler said. With the exception of all-aspect very low observability, or stealth, the F-15SE and F/A-18E/F international roadmap variant share many of the same sensor, avionics and weapons capabilities with the F-35.
"I think [UAE officials] would be interested, depending on exactly what they want," Kohler said.

Other unbuilt variants included the "F-15U", which was an F-15E modified for a United Arab Emirates (UAE) requirement; and the "F-15U (Plus)", which as its name implies was a much more heavily modified version of the F-15U for the UAE requirement, featuring such options as a bigger wing, built-in targeting system, and possibly vectored-thrust exhausts. The MDD proposals didn't make it into the finals of the competition.

UAE rejects F-16U proposal

  • 04 OCTOBER, 1995
  • SOURCE: FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL
LOCKHEED MARTIN'S plans to produce advanced derivatives of the F-16 combat aircraft have been dealt a blow with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) deciding to drop the F-16U from its strike-fighter competition.
The UAE's decision to reject the Lockheed Martin offer was because of the associated $2-3 billion development cost, say sources close to the programme. Lockheed is now offering the UAE F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft as a less costly (and less capable) alternative to the F-16U. The company was hoping to use the UAE as the launch customer for the advanced F-16 derivative. Lockheed Martin says that it could not comment on the range of F-16s being offered.
It had previously attempted to persuade Israel to procure the F-16 Enhanced Strategic variant of the F-16. This was optimised as a two-seat long-range strike aircraft. The Israeli air force purchased the McDonnell Douglas (MDC) F-15E instead.
Lockheed drew heavily on the projected F-16X programme for the F-16U, with the aircraft having a modified F-22 wing and advanced avionics. With wing tanks, the F-16U had a projected combat radius of over 1,850km (1,000nm).
Other competitors striving for the UAE's strike-fighter requirement include MDC, with the F-15U, an F-15E derivative; Dassault, with the Mirage 2000, followed by the Rafale; Sukhoi offering the Su-35 advanced Flanker; and the UK, pushing the Panavia Tornado interdictor- strike (IDS) aircraft, followed by the Eurofighter EF2000.
The UK is proposing to lease a dozen batch one Tornado IDS to the UAE for up to ten years.

JSF in the mix for UAE
Posted 9 October 2017 ·

Jon Lake looks at the latest moves in the UAE's long-running search for a next-generation fighter.

F-35%20copy_LR.jpg

The UAE has evaluated a number of fighter aircraft including the Dassault Rafale, Boeing’s Advanced Super Hornet and Advanced F-15 and the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Emirati attention now seems to have switched back to the Advanced F-15, already entering service with the Royal Saudi Air Force as the F-15SA and now ordered by Qatar as the F-15QA. These orders promise to keep the F-15 production line out to 2022.
Following a meeting between US Defence Secretary, James Mattis, and Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, reports emerged of renewed Emirati interest in the F-15, possibly as part of a two-phase deal that would also see the UAE Air Force eventually acquiring the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
In March, it was reported that the crown prince had received reassurances from US President, Donald Trump, about the possibility of the UAE acquiring fifth generation fighter jets.
A host of new capabilities have been added to the F-15 through the development of advanced derivatives of the F-15E Strike Eagle for South Korea (F-15K Slam Eagle), Singapore (F-15SG) and Saudi Arabia, as well as via upgrade and modernisation programmes for USAF F-15C/D Eagle fighters and F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bombers.
Any new Advanced F-15 customer can now opt for active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, new cockpit displays (including F-35 type large area displays), helmet-mounted sighting and display systems, advanced new electronic warfare and self protection systems, conformal fuel tanks and even a new wing with a longer fatigue life and two additional under-wing hardpoints, while the aircraft is compatible with a wide variety of advanced weapons.
A number of low-observable (stealth) features were developed under the F-15SE Silent Eagle programme, including conformal weapons bays for internal weapons carriage and a number of radar cross-section (RCS) reduction features, most obviously including canted tailfins. Though none of these features have been incorporated in the Saudi F-15SAs, and are not thought to be featured on the Qatari aircraft, they remain notionally available to other customers, including the UAE.
The aircraft’s raw performance remains impressive, even by modern standards, and it has a very useful payload range capability. Especially when coupled with advanced stand-off weapons, the Advanced F-15 gives its operators semi-strategic reach.
This may not be enough for the UAE, however, whose MBDA Black Shaheen cruise missile is an export variant of Storm Shadow and has a range of approximately 300 nautical miles (560 km) – roughly twice the range of the AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER, which is the main stand-off weapon offered with Advanced F-15 export versions.
The USAF is currently upgrading and modernising its Eagles, preparing them for further service, and including the integration of BAE Systems’ Eagle passive active warning survivability system (EPAWSS) on 400 F-15Es and F-15Cs.
The F-15C is now expected to remain in service until replaced by the next generation penetrating counter-air (PCA) platform, which is scheduled to reach initial operational capability in the mid- to late 2020s.
Steve Parker, Boeing’s vice-president of F-15 programmes, reportedly said that though PCA would be a new platform, any Boeing PCA candidate aircraft would feature technology developed on the F-15 and hinted that the aircraft’s outer mould line could be changed very easily, and that PCA would be “different from a wrapper perspective”.
But for the UAE, any F-15 purchase could prove to be an interim step, since the UAE Air Force and Air Defence wants to acquire the fully fifth generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
But the F-35 may not be the only fifth generation option for the UAE.
At the IDEX 2017 show in Abu Dhabi, Russian media reported the signing of a military and industrial cooperation agreement between the UAE and Russia, including the “creation, development and supply of a fifth-generation fighter jet” to fly some time after 2025.
This could see the UAE supporting and part-funding the Russian lightweight multi-role fighter (LMFS) programme, which aims to produce a replacement for the MiG-29.
Russian sources also reported Emirati interest in the Sukhoi Su-35, though many western analysts believe that any talks between the UAE and Russia are principally intended as a means of applying leverage on the US to ensure access to the F-35.

The UAE competition has all the usual suspects lining up to offer their wares : McDonnell Douglas (MDC ) is offering the F-15 U derivative of the F-15E ; Lockheed Martin i s likely to b e pushing the so called Block 60 variant of the F-16 ; Dassault is offering the Rafale and the Mirage 2000-5 ; British Aerospace i s proposing 24 Panavia Tornado GR4s and , possibly the Eurofighter 2000 ; and Sukhoi i s offering derivatives o f the Su-2 7 Flanker.

UAE gains AMRAAM go-ahead

  • 22 NOVEMBER, 1995
  • SOURCE: FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL

NCTR" Non-Cooperative Target Recognition".

HRM" High Resolution Map".
