Tarawa, the flagship for Expeditionary Strike Group One (ESG-1), is currently operating off the coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea in support of Exercise Bright Star 2005

The Lafayette, La., native launched five of the lightweight fiberglass target drones during the coalition training event, providing a realistic target for low-altitude air defense gunners with Marine Air Control Group 38 Detachment, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) to shoot down during a Stinger missile shoot. The training evolution allowed coalition forces from the host nation and the Netherlands to observe the equipment and procedures used by U.S. Marines to engage low-flying aircraft and met its goal of strengthening the bond between coalition forces, as well as displaying a portion of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable)'s warfighting capability.
