Eurofighter has revealed that the integration of multiple new systems and capabilities onto their Typhoon fighter jet is now ‘well advanced’ and ‘delivering promising results’, with customers having recently tested the aircraft’s latest software suite in a series of air-to-air and air-to-surface scenarios in the UK.

As part of the Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) Capability Update, the Typhoon is also set to receive upgrades to its radar, defensive aids sub-system, and avionics, all intended to improve the fighter’s offensive strength and survivability.

In addition, significant milestones have been achieved in the integration of the major new weapons systems. In early November 2015, a Typhoon aircraft successfully fired its first Storm Shadow missile. The weapon, created by MBDA Missile Systems, is a long-range, fire-and-forget cruise missile expected to significantly augment the fighter’s air-to-surface strike capability.
The recent trials of Eurofighter’s sixth Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA6) also included the fifth successful release of an MBDA Meteor missile, which will improve the Typhoons air-to-air strike alongside increasing air-to-surface power.

On future tests, Paul Smith, Eurofighter’s Capability Development Manager and a former RAF pilot, stated at a press conference during the 2015 Dubai Airshow, “During November we will see further integration work with Storm Shadow, including missile releases, and preparation for the next Meteor missile firing. Airbus Defence & Space, Spain will join as the fourth Flight Test Centre as IPA4 is cleared to commence testing with a focus on Weapons System Performance and Comms. This is the entire flight test community operating together to deliver real capability enhancement.”
Smith’s company, which manages the Typhoon programme on behalf of owners BAE Systems, Alenia Aermacchi, and Airbus Defence & Space, is enjoying increasing successes. September 2015 saw the sale of 28 units to Kuwait, making the Gulf constitutional monarchy the eighth operator of the aircraft in the world, and the third in the Middle East, with Typhoons in operation in Saudi Arabia, and 12 units ordered by Oman to enter service in 2017.

Despite these successes, Eurofighter continues to face stiff competition throughout Asia from its neighbours. An order for 24 Dassault Rafales, including an option clause for 12 more, was signed between the French contractor and the Qatar Emiri Air Force, who had also considered the Typhoon amongst others, such as Boeing’s F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, in May 2015. This rapidly followed Dassault’s first international contract, with Egypt purchasing 8 single-seat units and 16 of the two-seat variant in February. Eurofighter had also sought to win India’s multi-billion dollar MRCA competition, but lost out to Rafale in 2012.
With potentially dozens of units waiting to be signed for, both companies brought models of their aircraft to the Dubai Airshow, with conferences, flying displays, and interactive static displays to woo potential buyers in the UAE and elsewhere. The Typhoon continues to compete for business in Bahrain, Indonesia, Malaysia, and elsewhere, contending with fighters like the Rafale, the Saab Gripen, and the Super Hornet for huge potential orders.

Small wonder that Eurofighter is working to keep the Typhoon constantly upgraded with the latest technology. Smith elaborated on enhancement plans, saying “Our Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) Programme will enable Eurofighter operators to integrate the Brimstone 2 on the aircraft and will also further enhance other existing weapons capabilities – including Storm Shadow, Meteor, Paveway IV and ASRAAM. We aim to deliver P3E to the Customer in 2017.”
