Longbow HELLFIRE Missile
The Longbow HELLFIRE missile, designated the AGM-114L, is part of the HELLFIRE family of modular missiles and shares the same missile bus, including the rocket motor, control section, fuzing and a tandem shaped-charge warhead system with the HELLFIRE II semi-active laser (SAL) variants. It has a maximum lethal range in excess of 8 kilometers against both moving and stationary ground targets. The Longbow variant uniquely provides a true fire-and-forget capability in clear or adverse weather conditions and in the presence of battlefield obscurants. To achieve this capability, it employs a millimeter-wave (MMW) radar seeker-aided inertial guidance system and is capable of operating in either lock-on-before launch (LOBL) or lock-on-after launch (LOAL) modes.
The Longbow HELLFIRE missile receives a target handover from the aircraft’s weapons processor, which contains the target position and velocity. The missile inertially tracks this target position and acquires the target with the MMW radar seeker. The MMW radar seeker provides terminal guidance and autonomously develops the aimpoint for impact. High-resolution algorithms are used to provide a high probability of kill.
This Longbow HELLFIRE design optimizes the probability that the missile will engage the specific target designated by the weapons processor and aircrew using the Longbow Fire Control Radar (FCR). The missile’s search volume is designed to be relatively small and coincident with the amount of estimated error in the target handover position and velocity. This means the missile hits the target the pilot selects.
Another unique advantage the Longbow guidance system provides is the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously and to achieve a maximum firing rate. Multiple missiles can be launched at the prioritized list of fire control radar classified targets with a high confidence that each selected target will be hit and killed. The fire-and-forget capability, combined with this high rate of fire, minimizes helicopter exposure for weapon delivery and provides unprecedented survivability.
The Longbow HELLFIRE missile carries the tandem shaped-charge warhead used in the AGM-114K high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) configuration, meaning the missile is most effective against armored and hard targets.
