With only eight words in a ceremony with a thousand-year history,
command of the 2nd Bomb Wing changed hands in a ceremony on Barksdale
Air Force base today.
Col. Robert E. Wheeler assumed command of
the nation's largest bomb wing from Col. Daniel J. Charchian before a
crowd of hundreds of wing personnel, family members and guests in Hoban
Hall.
Their boss, 8th Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Robert J. Elder
Jr. presided over the ceremony, which took under an hour and ended with
Wheeler's name replacing Charchian's under the aircraft commander's
window on the wing's flagship B-52.
Wheeler comes to the 2nd Bomb
Wing from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., where he commanded the 509th
Operations Group, 509th Bomb Wing. He was responsible for operations and
operational support of the Air Force's only B-2 wing.
Charchian
will head for Saudi Arabia, where he will be an adviser to the Saudi
government, according to 2nd Bomb Wing Public Affairs.
