Northrop Grumman has been awarded a USD958 million contract by the US Marines Corps (USMC) for full-rate production of the gallium nitride-based (GaN) AN/TPS-80 ground/air task-oriented radar (G/ATOR) systems, the company announced on 10 June.
According to Northrop Grumman, the system is intended to replace three in-service legacy radars and the functionality of two retired systems (the AN/MPQ-62, the AN/TPQ-46, the AN/TPS-63, and the AN/TPS-73) operated by the USMC with a single system, with the aim to reduce training, logistics, and maintenance costs.
The contract is intended to provide an additional 30 units.
The radar, developed and fielded in four blocks, will be employed by the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) across the range of military operations (ROMO) to cover both ground and aviation missions
