قلتها قبل سنتين انها مسلحة

The recent Singapore Airshow was by all accounts a record breaker, with the highest trade attendance in its 18-year history and four times as many visitors as in 2022. If this was a signal of optimism in an aerospace recovery – that was certainly the feeling on the stands.

While my commercial colleagues were busy closing deals, announcing JMAs, and recording for media – on the military side, we were pleasantly deluged by Navies with particular interest in ASW/ASuW.

This is little surprise given the current regional trend for Naval modernisation and expansion. Pick any business analysis and you’ll see the ASW market is expanding, with one mainstream prediction of growth from nearly $60B (2022) to over $75B by 2030. According to ASPI, the IndoPac has been in a ‘submarine arms race’ for the last decade.

Talking with navies, there’s clear demand for rotary wing with advanced search (surface and sub-surface), with low acquisition and thru-life costs. Key demands were affordability and supportability.

There was also interest in multirole capability (more bang for buck). From feedback, several regional operators have experienced supply chain disruption, and higher than expected maintenance costs and challenges. A common theme – it doesn’t matter how much ‘whiz bang’ a capability offers, if it is not able to fly – it is of little use.

I was pleased to be showcasing again the latest Bell 412EPX, alongside Tom King from US-based Rotorcraft Services Group (RSG) who offer a hi-end modification for Maritime Search/ASW/ASuW. The first of these is already in service on a European-designed Frigate.

In what is a small, niche market, technology is clearly making Tier 1 ASW/ASuW capabilities more affordable. This includes AESA radars, advanced sonar, hi-end EO/IR, MAD detectors, lite-weight torpedoes and advanced anti-ship missiles. Many items are now available as MOTs/COTs via DCS. There was clear interest in combining such technology with an airframe that is robust, proven, affordable and supportable.

As the geostrategic environment changes (generally for the worse), the ability of navies to access hi-end defensive capabilities within budget is happily on the rise.
