UAE-based company Calidus has unveiled for the first time its new light attack aircraft, the B-250, with multirole capabilities at Dubai Airshow 2017 on 12 November.


The B-250 has been part of the Bader programme that originated in 2015 with a range of partners including Brazilian company Novaer, the provider of the aircraft's structure, and Rockwell Collins, the manufacturer of the onboard avionics system with its Pro Line Fusion technology.

The aircraft is the first military fighter to be developed in the country and was a result of a capability gap, Hamdan Abdulla Al Shkeili, chief software engineer at Calidus, explained to Shephard. The first delivery of the aircraft is expected imminently.

‘Today we are introducing our project the B-250. It has very strong, cutting edge avionics to enable the aircraft to do its missions accurately and precisely,’ he said.

The Pro Line Fusion avionics suite will have graphical interfaces that are integrated with a digital HUD and multi-function display windows. Terrain awareness and EO/IR video displays are also expected to provide pilots with greater air space awareness.

The single/dual pilot aircraft’s mission capabilities will be centred around counter insurgency, ISR, close air support and advanced training operations.

In relation to the weapon capabilities, the B-250 can an array of weapons with capacity for seven munitions as well as an EO/IR.

‘It is designed to be flexible for end users. It can carry different kinds of weapons and rockets. It is fulfilling a gap that the market is needing for modern warfare with very low operational costs,’ Al Shkeili commented.

He explained further that the company is receiving a lot of domestic and international interest in the B-250 and ‘active communication’ is currently taking place with end users.


Novaer developed the aircraft’s structure which comprises of carbon fibre which was a key requirement from Calidus due to its lightweight capabilities.

‘It has outstanding performance due to the fact that it is the first aircraft in this category to be totally made of carbon fibre. Carbon fibre means it has better weight and anti-fatigue [components] which gives the aircraft more lifetime,’ Al Shkeili said.

The production facility for the aircraft is in the early stages of development and will be located in Al Ain although Al Shkeili confirmed that there is an opportunity for a ‘very high production’ at the site.

At this stage, the B-250 has flown more than 50 flight hours. According to reports, it is believed that in the summer of this year the first prototype of the aircraft undertook its first engine spin.

Currently, there are two aircraft at the show one on static and one participating in the flight display. There was no further confirmation on any other B-250s at this stage.

It utilises one 1,600shp P&WC PT6A-68 engine and the B-250’s maximum payload is 1,796kg. the aircraft’s service ceiling is 30,000ft with a range of 2,400nm at 301kt.

قدرات الطائرة يمكنها ان تتم بوسطة طيار واحد او اثنين وستكون متمحورة حول مكافحة التمرد COIN بالاضافة لقدرات الاستخبار والمراقبة والاستشعار (ISR) , الدعم الجوي القريب و عمليات التدريب المتقدم .

بحسب الشكيلي : تم تصميمها لتكون مرنة للزبائن , يمكنها حمل انواع مختلفة من الاسلحة والصواريخ , انها تردم الفجوة في السوق الي يحتاج قدرات حرب حديثة بكلفة تشغيلية متدنية .
ايضا أوضح الشكيلي ان الشركة تلقت الكثير من الاهتمام المحلي والعالمي وهناك اتصالات نشطة مع الزبائن ..

نوفاير ( الشريك البرازيلي ) طور بنية الطائرة من الياف الكربون والذي كان متطلبا رئيسا من شركة كاليدس الاماراتية بسبب قدراتها في الوزن الخفيف .

ايضا , الاداء المذهل هو بسبب واقع انها اول طائرة في هذا المجال تصنّع بالكامل من الياف الكربون , وهي تعني انها ستكون افضل وزنا وقدرة في مكافحة الجهد على الاجزاء مما يعطيها وقت حياة اطول .

منشأة الانتاج لهذه الطائرة هي في مراحلها الأولية من التطوير وستكون موجودة في مدينة العين , وقد أكد الشكيلي ان هناك فرصة لانتاج عالي جدا في الموقع ..

في هذه المرحلة , طارت الطائرة اكثر من 50 ساعة طيران ..

لدى الطائرة محرك واحد بقدرة 1600 حصان من نوع P&WC PT6A-68 وقدرة حمولة قصوى تبلغ 1,796 كج , سقف عمليات يبلغ 30,000 قدم مع مدى يبلغ 2,400 ميل بحري على سرعة 301 عقدة .

عجبتني الطائرة بدر 250 مصنوعه بالكامل من الكاربون فايبر و الكاربون فايبر اقوى من الحديد بسبع مرات ويتحمل الحرارة عالية و طبعا لا يصدأ و خفيف الوزن ، ستساعد هذه الخفة الطائرة بطيران لمسافات اطول و تحميل اسلحه اثقل و توفير الوقود ، وكذالك شكلها و لونها و تسليحها محلي بداية ممتازه ، ذكرني شكلها و عرض جناحها بطائرة ستوكا الالمانية النازية التي لم تقهر ، طبعا مع اختلاف المهام اليوم لك طائره منهم .

نظرة على المدى الهائل للطائرة ( بالطبع لن يكون كذلك عند تحميلها بالأحمال الاضافية من تسليح ومعدات ,, لكن للتشبيه ننظر لمدى 2400 ميل بحري , تساوي 4,444 كم تقريبا , بالانطلاق من ابوظبي )

مدى هائل .... اتمنى من الشركة وضع ارقام المدى القتالي ( COMBAT RADUIS ) بالاعتبار لسرعات وأحمال وسقف عمليات مختلفة للتوضيح اكثر في هذا الجانب ...

  Occupying a central position in the static aircraft park, Calidus LLC is an industrial machinery and equipment company located in Abu Dhabi, which has branched into aircraft manufacture with two related designs – civil and military.
  
  Both are on view at the Airshow, the beefy-looking B-250 Bader turboprop an obvious source of interest, in being adorned with UAE Air Force markings. Whether or not that is significant, neither party will say, although it additionally carries a Brazilian civil registration, PR-ZNU.
  
  Surrounded by weapons which can be hung on its seven hardpoints, and additionally fitted with an electro-optical sensor turret under the forward fuselage, the B-250 is offered for close air support; intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance; counter-insurgency; and advanced training.
  
  It looks like a slightly larger version of

  ’s Tucano – which is not surprising, because both are from the drawing board of the Brazilian, Joseph Kovács. And it does the same jobs at a more economic price, says Calidus.
  
  The four-seat T-Xc, here in prototype form, hails from the same Brazilian stable, and though designed to replace aged Neiva T-25 Universals in South America, it has obvious applications as a utility and touring machine.
  
  Both aircraft were airlifted to the Airshow by a UAE Air Force

  Globemaster III, but Calidus is expected to announce plans for further production to be in the UAE. This, and more, will be revealed when the aircraft are formally unveiled today, adding a new chapter to an already interesting story.
  
  
  
  And thereby hangs a tale…
  
  In 1983, in Brazil, Joseph Kovács put down on paper some ideas for a two-seat aerobatic touring aircraft, which would be like a baby version of the EMB-312 Tucano he had masterminded for Embraer (and is still in production as the EMB-314 Super Tucano, by the way). Design of the Kovacs K-51 Peregrino (Peregrine) began in earnest in 1988, but it was not until 28 November 1998 that the prototype flew.
  
  Though promising, the aircraft failed to find a sponsor willing to fund production and, even, a kitbuilt version did not see light of day. Undeterred, Kovács schemed a larger K-52, for which the K-51, by then with over 200 flying hours to its credit, was deemed the proof-of-concept.
  
  Meanwhile, also in Brazil, the Novaer company was formed in 1998 by the late Luiz Paulo Juanqueira, formerly head of Embraer's equipment division, its main function being an aircraft component supplier. A subsidiary of the Geometra company, it became a prime contractor for the landing gear of the (Super) Tucano and also worked on design of Eviation Jets EV-20 (the reconfigured, former VisionAire Vantage) business jet.
  
  In October 2007, Novaer acquired the services of Kovács and rights to his designs, leading to 2009 proposals for a developed, side-by-side seat version of K-52 (Project T-Xc) as potential replacement for the Brazilian Air Force's T-25 Universal and a U-Xc four-seater that was first known as the Pilgrim. In December 2014, the T-Xc became the Sovi (Ictinia Plumbea, the Plumbeous Kite) and the U-Xc was dropped. Also schemed was a Sovi MTP (military turboprop) with a bubble canopy.
  
  With the assistance of Brazilian government development funding, the new, four-seat Sovi first flew on August 22, 2014, partly thanks to the state holding company Santa Catarina, taking a minority stake in Novaer in 2013, with the intention of building a local factory, to open in 2018, on condition that funds were obtained for certification. The aircraft shown in Dubai is this original airplane, repainted although still carrying its Brazilian registration PP-ZKV and type designation N-210.
  
  In a parallel development, U.S. Aircraft Corporation was formed in Ohio in 2004 as a subsidiary of an aerospace abrasives company, having foreseen the need for nations friendly to the U.S. to have a new counter-insurgency aircraft.
  
  This prescience did not extend to its design for the aircraft it designated A-67 Dragon. The Missouri-based Golden Aviation company built a prototype which first (and last) flew on October 6, 2006, when the undercarriage partly collapsed on landing.
  
  A completely new A-67 Dragon was produced by dint of re-designating the K-52 in its tandem seat form, but the initiative terminated through lack of support…..until now.
