JEDDAH - Turkey is now at the stage of offering its own defense platforms for Saudi Arabia with sharing its technology and production capabilities.
Turkey encourages defense and aviation companies to work in Saudi Arabia and establish joint ventures in order to further develop long-lasting defense cooperation.
ASELSAN with SDR radios and thermal cameras, FNSS with modernization of M113 armored vehicles and MKEK with rocket modernization are the examples of successful defense cooperation programs established in Saudi Arabia.
Moreover, Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) of Turkey has opened a representative office in Riyadh to directly coordinate defense cooperation activities in Saudi Arabia since 2011.
The product portfolio of the Turkish defense and aviation industry widens with more than a hundred defense manufacturers and more than thousand small scale enterprises in Turkey. Turkish companies are highly competitive in certain areas providing the right technological and quality standards regarding the design and manufacturing of armored vehicles, shipbuilding, naval combat management systems, stabilized machine gun platforms, avionics, software defined radios, command and control systems, simulators, military clothing and logistics.
Therefore, in terms of products and capabilities, Turkish defense industry has been expanding its product portfolio and developing more capabilities. In an effort to meet the TUAF's ATAK helicopter needs, a contract for 59 helicopters has been signed with SSM and first deliveries have started to Turkish Armed Forces. The ATAK helicopter namely T129 has been equipped with Turkish owned avionic and gun systems, and known as the most effective ATAK helicopter in its own range in the world.
ROKETSAN has designed and developed 122 mm and 107 mm extended range Multiple Launch Rocket Systems. These modern artillery rocket systems are in the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces and currently are in serial production. ROKETSAN concentrates on application of critical technologies such as precision mechanics, composite material, and fuses. The 2.75" semi-active laser guided missile, C?R?T, is the highly accurate and cost effective solution for the ATAK helicopter against lightly armored ground targets.
SOM (Stand Off Missile) has been developed to fire from the fighter jets against heavily defended high value land and sea targets. Air to Surface Missile Family, designed to operate in hostile environments and to be used against heavily defended high value land and sea surface targets. All have a modular design to support the required operational flexibility.
Against this backdrop, the 12th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2015) will be held in Istanbul on on May 5-8, 2015, an occasion to spot Turkish defense and aviation industry products. IDEF is proven to be one of the most successful defense and security cooperation events in the region, attracting more exhibitors and visitors in time. Saudi stakeholders are invited to join the IDEF 2015.
