تعاقدت وزارة الدفاع البريطانية مع ليوناردو لتوفير طائرة اختبار كبيرة الجسم كجزء من مبادرة Team Tempest.
أعلن في Royal International Air Tattoo ان العقد سيلزم الشركة بتوفير طائرة اختبار على شكل Boeing 757 معدلة للعمل كtestbed aircraft يتم اختبار انضمة الطاءرة الجديدة عليها, و اختبار ايضا قدرات تحسينية للf-35 و الEurofighter Typhoon
وزارة الدفاع البريطانية لم تقدم قيمة العقد ، لكنها قالت إن الطائرة التي تم اختبارها ستدخل الخدمة في أوائل عام 2020.
شركة Leonardo هي واحدة من أربعة شركاء صناعيين أساسيين في برنامج Tempest الذي يتم تطويره من قبل RAF Rapid Capabilities Office ، ومختبر علوم وتكنولوجيا الدفاع (Dstl) ، ومعدات الدفاع والدعم (DE&S) ؛ الآخرون هم BAE Systems و MBDA UK و Rolls-Royce.
من المقرر أن تدخل الخدمة في أوائل ال2030 ،وفقًا لوزارة الدفاع ، يتم تطوير طائرة تيمبست "من الداخل إلى الخارج" ، مع التركيز على الأنظمة وأجهزة الاستشعار بدلاً من هيكل الطائرة الذي سوف يستوعبها.
BAE Systems has previously noted it will feature a flexible payload; adaptable airframe; long-range sensing; laser direct-energy weapons; advanced materials; intelligent maintenance; dynamically reconfigurable architecture; cyber protection; MUM-T; trusted artificial intelligence reasoning; and a future 'wearable' cockpit. Future powerplants are being explored also, with the RAF recently touting the notion of hypersonic (Mach 5+) technologies and engines being developed for future platforms
Further to the aircraft itself, the Tempest will operate in concert with 'loyal wingman' unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) being developed under the Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) programme, and alongside all other air assets as part of a Future Combat Air System FCAS
The Tempest programme is a fundamental pillar of the MoD's Combat Air Strategy (CAS), with a GBP2 billion (USD2.65 billion) initial investment in the project announced at the 2018 Farnborough Air Show
