The delivery of the first two Belgian aircraft at Luke Air Force Base (Phoenix, Arizona) appears to be delayed by six months. “Based on the current schedule, the hardware will be ready by December 2023. The certification and qualification of the software and the final delivery of the aircraft depend on the results of the test campaign and are currently estimated for the second quarter of 2024,” said Defense
Belgium refuses new F-35A fighters because they are (for the time being) technically unsatisfactory
Problems with new software and certification
The contract that our country concluded with the US states that the F-35s, as for all other countries, must be delivered in the most recent/modern available configuration. The F-35A is currently undergoing a major hardware and software upgrade. Among other things, important computers and screens will be replaced in order to implement a series of new capabilities on the F-35A: new weapons, improved electronic warfare, etc.
According to the Ministry of Defense, “this upgrade is known as "Tech(nology) Refresh 3 (or also called TR-3)" and the new capabilities are referred to as "Block 4 (upgrade)". These make the aircraft considerably more resistant to the current modern ground and air threat, both offensively and defensively”
