SEOUL—Air forces operating the Boeing F-15 Eagle are almost universally interested in the MBDA Meteor becoming available as a weapon for the fighter, the U.S. manufacturer says.

The comments raise a strong possibility that before long one F-15 operator or another will pay for integration of the long-range missile onto the aircraft, diminishing the market for its standard air-to-air weapon, the Raytheon AIM-120 Amraam.

“We are actively engaged with customers” on the possibility of launching development work to equip the F-15 with the Meteor, says Tim Williams of Boeing’s fighter business.

Except for the U.S. Air Force, “every F-15 operator is interested in the Meteor,” Williams said at the Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition, held Oct. 17–22.

Such broad customer interest suggests that expenses could be shared so that no operator paid high non-recurring costs for the upgrade. Although it is likely that only one country would be the launch customer, manufacturers can structure contracts so that later buyers compensate the one that first took the plunge.

The U.S., Japan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, South Korea and Singapore operator the F-15. Qatar is negotiating an order.

Japan and Britain, the lead country in the group of six European nations that have developed the Meteor, are studying the possibility of fitting it with a seeker featuring an active electronically scanned array. Japan would use that version, but the country has not identified the fighter that would carry it.

With the same 178-mm (7-in.) dia., the Meteor is designed to fit stores locations that can accept the Amraam, though the air-breathing MBDA weapon has inlets and therefore creates more drag.

Boeing has proposed carriage of up to 20 Amraams on the F-15, but customers are unlikely to want to pay for so much integration work. Testing would be required for each station.

The Meteor’s ramjet engine gives the missile a much greater range than the Amraam. Unlike rocket-motored air-to-air missiles, which fall on their targets ballistically, the Meteor is still under power and therefore highly maneuverable in the last seconds of an engagement. So the target has less chance of dodging.
