Chinese subs and frigates may be Egypt's best choice: Sina
Chinese submarines and other naval vessels may once again be the best option for Egypt as it looks to update its fleet, says the Beijing-based Sina Military Network.
The Egyptian Armed Forces, one of the 40-plus militaries around the world equipped with Chinese weapons, recently conducted a series of large-scale live-fire exercises. The naval portion of the drills featured China's Type 037 corvette and Type 024 class missile boat, both of which are capable of firing anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles.
Following independence in 1952, Egypt relied primarily on Soviet arms technology such as the Osa-class missile boat. However, after the 1973 war between the coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel, Egypt-Soviet relations began to sour, making Soviet vessels more difficult to service and maintain. Consequently, Egypt reached out to China to acquire similar equipment as supplements and the two countries have maintained friendly military cooperation since.
In the mid-1980s, Egypt acquired two Type 053 frigates from China, as well as four Type 033 submarines. According to Sina Military, none of these were regarded as particularly advanced, though through modifications and upgrades they were able to provide the Egyptian Navy with a solid foundation and sufficient firepower to take on Israel.
The Type 033 submarines, which have been in service for nearly 30 years, continue to be used by the Egyptian Navy to train new crew, though it is clear that new purchases will soon be necessary, the report said. Egypt currently does not have the budget to acquire high-end submarines like Germany's Type 209 and Type 214, France's Scorpene-class or Sweden's Gotland-class, leaving China again as the top option for new acquisitions, the report added.
In the last few decades, China's arms exports to African countries have gradually evolved from low-mid end patrol and artillery corvettes to mid-high end large training ships, multifunction patrol ship and multipurpose support vessels. Sound economic development in Africa also means larger budgets and greater needs.
Accordingly, China's ship-building industry is turning its planning towards filling the needs for the African arms market, in particular the small to mid-sized guided missile frigate segment, the report said, adding that Chinese companies will have to find a way to stand out among competitors such as Germany's MEKO family of warships, France's La Fayette-class frigate and the Netherlands' Sigma-class corvette
