Lockheed Martin is renewing its efforts to sell the F-16 to India.
Even with India and France negotiating a definitive agreement for the direct purchase of 36 Rafale fighters, there is a "breath of life" in aircraft manufacturers defeated in MMRCA competition that gave victory to the Rafale.
At least three of those who participated - Eurofighter, Lockheed and Saab - have renewed their offers for the production of its aircraft under 'manufacturing in India'.
With the government canceling the MMRCA and reducing the purchase of the Rafale from 126 to a mere 36 fighters and Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar, stating that "other plane" could be purchased to replace the MiG-21, companies see this as a new opportunity .
Official sources said that Saab has offered Gripen NG India with full transfer of technology, and cooperation in developing the Tejas MK-II.
While Germany has consistently promoted the Typhoon, Lockheed F-16 has renewed its offer to India. This offer was renewed last month when officials of BAE Systems and Lockheed, met Mr. Parrikar.
Nothing has been decided politically, but militarily, Air Force officials said more Rafale fighters must be purchased. According to them, two squadrons of Rafale would be a waste of resources.
