Islamabad: Egypt’s decision to buy 24 state-of-the-art Rafale jet fighters from France
sure is disappointing news for Islamabad and Beijing , as both had long been extensively pursuing Egypt to buy JF-17s , a multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China.
Since 2010, Egypt was in discussions with Pakistan on a deal to co-produce the JF-17 for the Egyptian Air Force and Pakistan had even agreed on a ToT (Transfer-of- Technology) but by now the JF-17 could not attract a single export order.
Farale is a French twin-engine, canard delta-wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation , the same company that designed Egyptian Mirage2000s. It is equipped with a wide range of weapons and is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, reconnaissance, and nuclear strike missions.
According to reports French President, Francois Hollande announced on Thursday that Egypt will buy 24 aircrafts as part of a deal reportedly valued at 5.2 billion Euros ($5.9 billion), and his Defense Minister is heading to Cairo on Monday to sign the agreement.
Earlier France struggled to sell its 4.5 Generation Rafale jet fighter to Brazil, Libya, Morocco and Switzerland, but all had fallen through. However a deal has been finalized with India to Supply 126 Rafales, the deal is said to be the mother of all defense deals worth more than 12 billion dollars.
Egypt , who learnt bitter lessons in wars like the Six day war and Yum-kippur Wars with Israel, has come to the realisation that a strong Air force is needed to ensure a quality Deterrence against their enemies like Israel, which has strong fleets of F-16 Sufas Block 50/52 and F-15 Strike Eagles with Tel Aviv Planning to Acquire Fifth-Generation Aircrafts like F-35 lightening II from U.S.
According to experts one of the reasons as to why Egypt has chosen to buy French aircrafts, is to end the U.S arms monopoly, which has always favored Israel with providing High-tech military hardware as compared to its Arab allies in the region. A good example could be that EAF (Egyptian-Air Force) operates 220 F-16s of different blocks supplied by United States. However, these F-16s cannot fire a BVR missile like Aim-120 Amram to shoot down a distant hostile object, unlike the F16s IAF (Israeli Air Force) which enjoys air-superiority by having BVR capability.
The JF-17 however is said to be a low-cost cutting edge platform for countries like Egypt, which is looking for a replacement for its outdated Russian supplied Mig21s and Chinese F7 Aircrafts with an All-Weather Multirole Aircraft
Taking into account Egypt’s economic and operational requirements, analyst Usman Shabbir of the Pakistan Military Consortium think tank said. “The JF-17 is cheaper to buy and operate and comes with a weapons package that Egypt can’t get elsewhere.”
Egypt already operates K-8 Karakoram, an advanced trainer/light-attack aircraft supplied by Pakistan. According to data available on the internet, 4-5 units of JF-17 Aircrafts could be bought in the price of a single Dassault Rafale.
يعني من الأخير الثاندر لم تعد من مستوانا
