(Defensa.com) The Spanish delegation at the United Nations on 17 December recorded documentation on extending the limits of the continental shelf beyond the current 200 nautical miles west of the Canary Islands. Thus, the Spanish border is now underwater 350 miles west of the islands, increasing the territory in an area of 296,000 square kilometers. This measure is intended to protect the marine environment but especially to ensure ownership of the natural resources of soil and subsoil in the area such as oil, gas or mineral complex.
This measure is based on the law of the sea convention UN to allow a State to extend its sovereignty beyond 200 nautical miles if you have the relevant scientific literature. The documentation sent by Spain was obtained following the work carried out for six years by the Geological Survey of Spain, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and Marine Hydrographic Institute (Spanish Navy). During these campaigns have been conducted research for the expansion of the Continental Shelf of Spain which focused on the acquisition of morphological and geological data vital to support this proposed extension to the abyssal plain of Madeira. Twice Spain requested extensions like this with Earlier, in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea. From here to the UN ratify the extension of territory shall pass five years, but Spain obtains a pre-law and exercised sovereignty over this area.In practical terms will be responsible for allowing or not any commercial activities affecting the marine soil or subsoil area.
