Over the past two years Northrop Grumman has expanded its rotary services to the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG) in anticipation of the standing up of the new 1st Aviation Brigade in 2015.
Through its Technical Services division and its local Saudi Joint Venture company Vinnell Arabia, Northrop Grumman has provided training, logistics and operational services since 2012 and aims to widen its service provision further.
Speaking to reporters at a pre-AUSA briefing on 7 October, Gregory Schmidt, VP of mission solutions and readiness at Northrop Grumman Technical Services, said that the JV has introduced rotary assets into SANG and performed the ‘integration and support of 12 MD530F aircraft’ that are being used for training.
He said that the 4th Brigade, which is the SANG’s training wing, was established in May 2013 as the aircraft were delivered for the first time.
‘Since then [the company has] supported SANG in 2,000 training flights, 20,000 unique aircraft manoeuvres and 4,000 flight hours with zero safety incidents,’ Schmidt added and said that they have achieved operational readiness above 90% for the aircraft.
So far the company has trained 24 SANG pilots and three instructor pilots in the past 18 months and Northrop Grumman is looking ahead to working with SANG to perform airfield management and operations from July 2015 when the 1st Aviation brigade will stand up.
The brigade will consist of 12 AH-64E Apache helicopters, 24 UH-60M Blackhawks and 24 Boeing AH-6i Little Birds, the latter of which were contracted from Boeing in August this year.
