Saudi Typhoon plans gain momentum

Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 2 aircraft are to field the capability to self-designation precision-guided bombs this year. The air force will become the first to field fully autonomous air-to-ground capabilities on the Tranche 2 variants.
According to Major Shareef, of the RSAF's 3 Squadron, the service is moving fast to exploit all the potential of the Typhoon, which he described as a "very good aircraft".
Major Shareef told a briefing at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire that the RSAF had already practised day and night air-to-air refuelling in the Typhoon. "We have done quick-reaction alert for the first time and have already started air-to-ground training. We are waiting for the Phase One Enhancement (P1E) to provide the full air-to-ground role."
His squadron, based at King Fahd Airbase at Al Taif in southwestern Saudi Arabia, is responsible for training and conversion of pilots using the 24 Typhoon so far delivered. "We have 20 pilots converted and seven in training in Taif about to finish [their conversion course]," he said.
Andy Lavin, BAE Systems Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Programme Director, said the company was working with the RSAF to fully fielding the P1E capability this year. This gives the Typhoon the capability to self-designated Paveway guided bombs with the [Thales Damocles advanced] targeting pod. "The Saudis will integrate and use pods in advance of the UK," Lavin said.
He added that deliveries to Saudi Arabia of the next batch of 48 Typhoon aircraft assembled at the company's Warton site would begin next year. Continuous deliveries would continue until all 72 are handed over. The final configuration of the last 24 aircraft had yet to be confirmed but Lavin said they would be built to allow for future technology insertion, such as electronically scanned array radars, to meet emerging Saudi requirements. This requires reinforced airframes and different fuel tanks to permit changes to the aircraft's centre of gravity, he said.
BAE Systems is continuing to build up the engineering and logistics support capability at Taif, according to Lavin, based on an availability contracting model. This includes the opening of a maintenance facility that can carry out the equivalent of second-line servicing.
The company is in negotiations to move to the next phase of Typhoon support to extend the involvement of Saudi industry. The aim is to build the capacity to repair major Typhoon equipment in the kingdom. "We have embraced local industry in various capacities," Lavin said.
BAE Systems is already contracted to conduct depth maintenance and upgrade work on the RSAF's Panavia Tornado fleet at the state-of-the-art Tornado Planned Depth Maintenance Unit at Dhahran air base in eastern Saudi Arabia, said Lavin. "That concept of work is in play; we would like to use that facility for Typhoon as well."
Major Shareef, a former Boeing F-15C/D pilot, has accumulated 230 hours in the Typhoon and is now an instructor pilot.
"As soon as I started conversion I discovered the Typhoon was really something good for me," he said. "Typhoon has big performance improvements on the F-15. The training facilities for Typhoon conversion are easy, it is not that difficult [to learn to fly it]. We are now taking people straight from our air force academy, who have just flown the BAE Systems Hawk, to fly the Typhoon."
