The discussions that began in mid-2021 between Airbus Group and the general staff of the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) have been fruitful (AI, 07/09/21). According to our sources, the European aeronautics giant has entered the final phase of negotiations for a contract to modernise at least twenty Ecureuil (AS350) helicopters, as well as models based on the same design, which are currently being used by the armed forces and gendarmerie. They were delivered in the 1980s by Eurocopter, now Airbus Helicopters and a wholly owned subsidiary of the European aircraft manufacturer. As part of this retrofit, these aircraft will receive new observation equipment in the form of Wescam day-night optronic turrets produced by the American company L3Harris Technologies. The army has chosen to work exclusively with Airbus in order to benefit from all the guarantees the manufacturer offers. A second contract is on the horizon to equip the DGSN, the national police force, with helicopters. Several companies specialising in the integration of surveillance and communication interception systems are keen to see the project specifications. Thye include the Austrian company Airborne Technologies, which has several helicopter transformation contracts to its credit based on the Leonardo AW109, AW139 and AW169 platforms. It is widely expected that Leonardo will equip the Algerian police, since the Italian manufacturer is currently building an assembly plant in Setif (AI, 19/01/21). However, the DGSN has not yet decided on its future helicopter, and is even less sure of the sensors it wishes to carry on board. |
