The total number of nuclear warheads across the world has decreased but China and Pakistan have increased their number of nuclear arsenals, according to a report by a think-tank. However, a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed that the countries are modernising their nuclear arms.
The SIPRI report throws some interesting findings at the time when the world is witnessing heightened tensions in the middle-east. Let's have a look at what the report says.
- According to the report, the total number of nuclear warheads has decreased from 14,465 in 2018 to 13,865 in 2019. The report attributed the reduction in the arsenal to the US and Russia as Washington and Moscow accounts for over 90 per cent of all nuclear weapons.
- The report divided nuclear weapons into two categories – deployed warheads and other warheads. Deployed warheads are placed on missiles or located on bases with operational forces while the other warheads are stored or reserve warheads and retired warheads awaiting dismantlement. It puts the number of deployed warheads in 2019 at 3,750 and other warheads at 10,115.
- China's total number of nuclear warheads has increased from 280 in 2018 to 290 in 2019. Beijing has no deployed arsenals in 2019. On the other hand, Pakistan's nuclear weapons have gone up from 140-150 in 2018 to 150-160 in 2019.
- France and India have not increased the number of nuclear weapons as compared to last year. France has 300 nuclear warheads while India has 130-140.
- The report also said that the US and Russia have undertaken an extensive programme to replace and modernize their nuclear warheads.
