China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) (Hall 5, H521) is showing its total fire support capability at Eurosatory this year, albeit in model form only. This includes an extensive range of tracked and wheeled self-propelled (SP) artillery systems, but also towed artillery systems, artillery rocket systems, ammunition and the essential target acquisition systems.
China has moved away from the Russian 152mm calibre to the standard NATO 155mm calibre and is marketing the 155mm/ 52 calibre PLZ52 tracked SP artillery system and its associated ammunition resupply vehicle, alongside the older 155mm/ 45 calibre PLZ45 SP system that has been sold to at least two countries in the Middle East.
An increasing number of countries are now moving to wheeled SP artillery systems and Norinco is filling this gap with its SH1 155mm/52 calibre system on a 6x6 platform with a protected cab.
Towed artillery systems are not neglected and these include the AH1 155mm/45 calibre and the AH2 155mm/52 calibre; both of these have an auxiliary propulsion unit.
Norinco has now completed development of its latest AH4 155mm/39 calibre gun howitzer that is very similar in concept to the BAE Systems M777 but uses lightweight materials, which has enabled its weight to be reduced to 4.26 tonnes for use by rapid deployment forces.
Norinco is also marketing at least three types of 122mm SP artillery systems, the tracked SH3 and the wheeled SH2 and CS/SH1.
To provide fire support at longer ranges is the AR3 guided multi-launch rocket system, which can carry pods of 370mm or 300mm unguided or guided rockets to allow for precision target engagement out to 280km

M777 Key Facts
• BAE Systems’ M777, the world’s first 39 calibre 155mm Howitzer weighing less than 10,000 lbs (4,220 kg), which through proven technology and the innovative use of titanium and aluminium alloys, meets the requirement for rapidly deployable, reliable and accurate artillery fire support.
• The M777’s light-weight design allows it to be transported by medium lift aircraft and lightweight vehicles over desert and mountainous terrain and can be brought into and out of action before counter battery fire can reach the gun.
• With over 1,000 guns built and over 350,000 rounds fired, the M777 has proven pedigree in Middle East and Asian operations with the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and Canadian and Australian artillery.
• With the use of High-tech Fire Control, the gun has rapid communications and precision fires. With the use of the Excalibur Precision Munition, 650 of which were fired in Afghanistan, the M777 now has a range of over 40km, accurate within 10metres.
• The M777 was designed for long range, accurate and rapid deployment into and out of action before counter battery fire canreach the gun. At nearly half the weight of the existing M198 howitzer, a parallel trial in the United States saw the M198 take 19 minutes to come into action, whereas the M777 took 1.5 minutes.
• M777 is an extremely light, agile and stealthy weapon platform, deployable either as a battery or autonomously as a single gun in support of special operations. It is able to enter the battle earlier than any other comparable towed artillery system to deliver quick and decisive firepower through precision strike, interdiction, general and close support.
• Underpinned by a long term Life Cycle Sustainment Contract, the M777 System is supported world-wide, with many critical spares being delivered by BAE Systems to its users within days.
• From initial concept to the present day, the M777155mm lightweight howitzer has gone through more than 20 yearsof design, development and extensive testing in order to be the highest performing artillery system in service today.
