Saudi Arabia and South Korea plan to boost defense cooperation, a spokesman from the Asian country’s embassy said on Wednesday.
This issue figured prominently during talks on Wednesday between Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, and Korean Ambassador Kim Jin-soo, said Jungho Lee, a spokesperson for the Korean Embassy.
The talks are significant because of the Kingdom’s massive defense spending. Saudi Arabia recently announced its 2015 budget with expenditures projected at SR860 billion, with an emphasis on defense and security needs, apart from social development priorities.
“South Korea is also one of the few countries with which the Kingdom has signed a nuclear cooperation deal,” said a source. The defense cooperation pact between the two countries was signed early last year, he said. The fresh round of consultations would work out details of the deal. He said the two sides have agreed to appoint military attaches at their respective diplomatic missions. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in the early 1960s, Saudi Arabia has become South Korea’s fourth-largest trading partner.
At the end of 2013, Saudi Arabia’s investment in South Korea was over SR2.6 billion, while Korean companies invested a similar amount in the Kingdom. The two nations are looking to cooperate further in information technology, health and medicine, science, environment, human resources, culture, youth exchanges and sports.
