DUBAI: NorthStar to work on armed Bell 429

Abu Dhabi-based NorthStar Aviation is to work with airframe manufacturer Bell Helicopter to develop an armed variant of the latter’s 429 medium twin.

NorthStar has already seen sales success with its Bell 407GX-derived Multi-Role Helicopter (MRH), notably with the United Arab Emirates air force, which operates 30 examples of the light single.

However, Terry Key, vice-president and chief pilot at NorthStar, says that some potential operators want the additional capabilities and security that two engines provide.

“Some people want a twin, particularly for operations over water, or for the higher altitude and fly-away capability if they lose and engine,” he says.

Although the commercial variant is limited to a maximum take-off weight of 3,180kg (7,000lb) in some countries thanks to civil certification under the Part 27 category, any military variant could operate at a higher take-off weight, of at least 3,400kg.

Development would take around a year, says Key, although this is dependent on customer interest.

Bell has not previously looked at arming the 429, says Patrick Moulay, vice-president global sales and marketing. It prefers to leave this to “experts” like NorthStar and concentrate on “getting the most capability out of the aircraft”.

In the meantime, NorthStar is working to increase the range of munitions available on the 407 MRH, including the R-model of Lockheed Martin’s AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missile and Roketsan’s Cirit guided rocket.

The MRH is already able to deploy an older Hellfire variant, along with Raytheon’s Talon laser-guided rocket and AGM-176 Griffin missile.

New sensors, including FLIR Systems Star Safire 380 and L-3 Wescam MX-10 and MX-15 electro-optical/infrared camera will also be integrated to broaden choice for customers. “We want to keep increasing the capabilities of the aircraft,” says Key.

Armaments on the example on display at the Dubai show feature an M260 Hydra rocket pod, GAU-19 .50-calibre gun, Dillon Aero M134D 7.62mm mini-gun and a Hellfire on four of its six weapon stations.

في الوقت الراهن , تعمل الشركة على زيادة مدى الذخائر المتوفرة للهيليكوبتر 407 MHR وتتضمن الذخائر :

NorthStar Aviation showed its 407MRH multi-role helicopter at IDEX. Unveiled at the Quad-A conference last May, the 407MRH is a Bell 407GX modified with sensors and weapons capability to perform a number of ISR and light attack roles. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi and owned by a member of that emirate’s royal family, NorthStar developed the 407MRH at its facility in Florida. The UAE Armed Forces has ordered 30, most likely for the special operations helicopter unit, and 11 of them have already been delivered with the remainder arriving at a monthly rate.

SAAB RECEIVES ORDER FOR NEW ADVANCED AIRBORNE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS FROM UAE
PRESS RELEASE

09 November 2015

Defence and security company Saab has signed a contract with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to expand and enhance the Emirates’ airborne surveillance capabilities. Saab will deliver a new airborne Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) incorporating a new version of the Saab Erieye radar system. The order value amounts to approximately USD1.27 billion.

The new SRSS for the UAE uses the Global 6000 aircraft from Bombardier as a platform. The Swing Role Surveillance System is capable of simultaneous detection and tracking of multiple targets in the air, on land and at sea. It is the latest evolution of the Erieye system that incorporates Saab’s many decades of radar capabilities across all domains.

“The new version of Erieye is without a doubt the most capable airborne early warning and control system on the market. Saab’s capability to develop high technology solutions for customers shows that our focus on research and development is the right way to ensure continued competitiveness on the defence market,” says Håkan Buskhe, President and CEO of Saab.

"Saab understands the vital importance of advanced airborne surveillance and we have a family of products that play a key role in defence and civil security. The UAE’s selection of Saab’s solution confirms our strong position regarding airborne surveillance and systems integration,” says Micael Johansson, head of Saab Business Area Electronic Defence Systems.

The work will be carried out at Saab's facilities in Gothenburg, Linköping, Järfälla, Arboga and Luleå.

DUBAI: Lockheed excited about UAE involvement

Lockheed Martin chief executive Marillyn Hewson had a big day at the Dubai show, officially opening the company’s new permanent chalet and visiting the stand of the company’s newly acquired Sikorsky helicopter unit.

“We’re very excited about this new state-of-the-art facility that is a demonstration of our longstanding partnership with UAE, and really view this as an opportunity to continue to build strong ties, not only with our great business friends here in the UAE, but also with other customers,” said Hewson during a speech to inaugurate the chalet.

She says the US defence firm has already entertained a number of customers and potential customers at the three-storey facility, which features meeting rooms, dining facilities, and a terrace to view the flying display.

She says Lockheed’s involvement in the UAE extends well beyond the air show, as the company has hundreds of employees in the country.

Last year the company opened its Centre for Innovation and Security Solutions, a venue for collaboration on defence, pilot training, space exploration, cyber-security and other areas. “We’re very excited about the opportunities we have at this facility.”

“It’s an exciting time for us," she adds. "We look forward to supporting the UAE at Expo 2020 which is coming up, and partnering with them. This is a great place for us to do business and work together.”

The UAE is a major customer of Lockheed Martin. Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer shows that the UAE air force operates 78 F-16 Block 60 aircraft, four C-130H tactical transports, and four L-100 commercial transports.
