Egypt has ordered four more Airbus DS C295 transport aircraft in a deal which will take its fleet to 24
, maintaining its position as the biggest customer for the market-leading tactical airlifter. The contract also includes self-protection systems for the Egyptian fleet, equipment for heavy maintenance capacitation and a service support package for spares, training and maintenance of the fleet.
The new batch of aircraft will be delivered to the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) by Airbus DS next year and will follow the 20 aircraft previously ordered, of which sixteen are already in service. The initial order of three aircraft took place in October 2010. Another three were ordered in 2011, another six in 2012 and another eight in 2014. This sequence of orders clearly shows the Egyptian Air Force’s confidence in the platform based on its successful experience with it.
It should be recalled that the EAF C295’s fleet reached 10,000 flight hours last month. During these hours in operation, the C295 has demonstrated its versatility, robustness and efficiency as well as its outstanding operational capabilities especially in the harsh conditions and desert areas found in this region. Thus, the C295 is daily used for military and humanitarian missions such as the transport of civilian and military personnel as well as the support to populations in remote areas or in emergency situations. Furthermore, many pilot training operations have been successfully performed by the EAF with its C295.
160 C295s have now been ordered by 22 operators in 21 countries. Among them, there are 10 customers who, as in the case of Egypt, have shown its satisfaction with the aircraft placing repeated orders.

The Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Anti Surface Warfare (ASuW) roles are demanding ones, needing aircraft with the endurance and range to cover large areas, as well as the sensors and mission system to find and follow targets, and weapons to prosecute them if desired. Comfortable crew operating conditions are required for what are frequently long flights, and safe handling characteristics at low-level over water. Aircraft in the ASW role routinely fly missions lasting more than 8 hours, partly in order to patrol large areas of water to search for submarines, and partly because it is essential not to lose contact with a discovered submarine that is being monitored.

ASW01.jpg

These missions are typically conducted at low levels, often down to 500ft, to ensure that the on-board sensors can detect and track targets. At these altitudes fuel burn is higher, flying conditions can be uncomfortable for crews, and there is a risk to aircraft safety from its proximity to the sea. ASuW missions involve similar challenges in addition to the need to avoid attack by the ship being targeted. A range of sensors has to be carried in order to overcome the defensive tactics and countermeasures used by submarine commanders. Acoustic, radar, infrared, LIDAR, and magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) sensors are all in use, and new technologies are being developed. It is also essential to carry an extensive communications suite because ASW/ASuW operations are frequently conducted in co-operation with friendly ships or other aircraft, sometimes of other nations, requiring skilled co-ordination of tactics. A sophisticated and intuitive mission system is vital to integrate the diverse sensor-inputs and ensure maximum effectiveness for the multi-man crew. Finally the aircraft needs to be able to deploy sonobuoys to help detect a submarine plus torpedoes and/or depth charges to destroy it if required.

Airbus Military is the market leader in the medium-size ASW/ASuW sector. The has an endurance of up to 11 hours, excellent low-level flying characteristics with up to 3g manoeuvrability and a cruise speed optimised for persistent surveillance and wide area coverage. It benefits from wide field-of-view bubble windows and safe low-speed flying characteristics. And it has special anti-corrosion treatment for the maritime environment, contributing to its low cost of ownership. The C295 is normally equipped with the , providing up to four operators with an advanced interface with the sensors to ensure maximum operational effectiveness. The system processes the data from sensors including: radar, electro-optic/infrared, acoustics, MAD, automatic identification system, IFF, communications and electronic intelligence. Communications include satcoms, HF/VHF/UHF, and Link 11 and Link 16 datalinks. In the ASW, role it features sonobuoy and armament inventory management with launch pattern control. The C295 has been in service, and armed with Mk46 torpedoes since 2010. For longer-range ASW missions Airbus Military offers the A320 family with the potential to provide true oceanic coverag

Airborne early warning and command (AEW&C) is a critical function for air forces of all sizes with the potential to warn of incoming threats much earlier than with surface radar and to rapidly guide defensive forces to counter the adversary. AEW&C aircraft now offer a powerful tool in the homeland security arena to monitor inland as well as coastal borders against illegal immigration and smuggling, and for protection of key assets such as seats of government and to prevent attacks on major public events. Modern radar systems give the potential to track targets over any kind of terrain and a wide variety of communications systems are used to guide both surface and aviation assets to intercept illegal activity or terrorist threats.

AEW01.jpg

Aircraft in the role need to have the endurance to maintain surveillance for an extended period, room for the multi-man crew and their mission consoles, and be able to have a large radar antenna mounted on them. Existing solutions have focused on highly expensive, rotodome-equipped, large jet aircraft and smaller turboprop types, typically with only side-looking radars. Airbus Military has developed a highly-effective solution in this sector based on the proven airframe with a rotodome-mounted, 360°, fourth generation active electronically scanned array radar produced by Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) highly experienced Elta division.

The aerodynamic qualities of the C295 AEW&C have been proven in flight-test and it is set to provide a true AEW&C capability with unbeatable lifecycle costs. Its rotodome system ensures continuous coverage of the selected area regardless of terrain, and the C295 allows more than seven hours on-station. Four workstations are provided in an exceptionally roomy cabin with a rest area for use during lengthy missions.
