As the only shipbuilder in the UAE, Abu Dhabi Ship Building is a significant economic entity in the region and the UAE Navy’s prime maritime logistics support provider. It runs the Baynunah program for the Navy.

For nearly a decade, Raytheon has worked with Abu Dhabi Ship Building to integrate Rolling Airframe Missiles, Evolved Seasparrow Missiles and launchers onto the UAE’s Baynunah class of ships.

“Our relationship with Raytheon has grown stronger over time,” said Dr. Khaled Al Mazrouei, chief executive officer of ADSB. “We are pleased to work closely with Raytheon to provide the right products and solutions to support the UAE Navy.”

Both companies acknowledge this global partnership is about much more than selling weapon systems and building ships.

“We’re an integral partner,” said Chris Davis, president of Raytheon International, Inc. in the UAE. “We provide the equipment essential to the UAE Navy’s defense capabilities.”

The partnership is also unique. “How many times does Raytheon sell weapons to a shipbuilder and the Armed Forces agree to it?” Davis said.

When the mega shipbuilder cuts the steel to build a ship, Raytheon engineers work closely with it on the location of the launcher and integration of the weapons system.

The integration work culminates with live-fire testing. Prior to test events, a Raytheon team spends between five to nine days at sea with the UAE Navy, checking the launcher and completing dry runs of the test.

“Raytheon is a cradle-to-grave partner,” said Alan Davis, director of Raytheon’s Short-Ranged Defense Systems. “It’s a long-term commitment to ensure the success of their program.”

According to Al Mazrouei, it’s the first indigenous corvette program of its type in the Middle East, where ships are built and weapons systems are integrated in tandem.

The two companies continue to expand their relationship by consulting with one another on the design and development of future variants and new ship classes.
