Statement on the Delivery of U.S. Fighter Jets to Iraq
FORT WORTH, Texas (June 5, 2014) – Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United States Lukman Faily released today the following statement on U.S. military support for Iraq on the occasion of the delivery of U.S. fighter jets to Iraq:
“On behalf of the Republic of Iraq, I am honored to participate in this ceremony marking an historic milestone in military cooperation between the United States and Iraq. Today, at Lockheed Martin’s facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, we accept our government’s first advanced multirole fighter aircraft.
“In a few short months, the first batch of F-16 fighter jets, manufactured here in the United States, will arrive in Baghdad as the first major step in enhancing our air capabilities. We look forward to building a strong, capable Air Force that gives us the ability to protect our borders and fight terrorism. The delivery of these fighter jets represents a significant aspect of the U.S.-Iraqi relationship: one of mutual collaboration, assistance and communication.
“I would also like to thank my fellow speakers for demonstrating their support for U.S.-Iraqi relations: Heidi Grant, Deputy Under Secretary of the U.S. Air Force for International Affairs; Major General Dwyer Dennis, United States Air Force Program Executive Officer for Fighters and Bombers; Orlando Carvalho, Executive Vice President for Aeronautics, Lockheed Martin; and Rod McLean, Vice President and General Manager, F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group Programs, Lockheed Martin.
“Together with Mr. Faleh Al-Fayyadh, Iraq’s National Security Adviser and Major General Ali Al-Aaragy, Iraq’s military attaché, also in attendance today, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the United States on all levels. These fighter jets reinforce the joint U.S.-Iraqi commitment to security, democracy and the eradication of terrorism.”
