- 2 x Type 87 240mm, 6 tube anti-sub rocket launchers. 36 rockets 1,200m Beginning in 2006, the PLAN began to produce a newer, upgraded version of the Type 054 FFG, the Type 054A, or Jiangkai II. This vessel has slight modifications to the hull, but principally increased the anti-air defense of the vessel significanylt by adding a 32 cell vertical launch system (VLS) to the fore deck of the ship, employing 32 medium range (HQ16) anti-air missiles and the sensors to guide and direct them.
Since that time, the PLAN has been in serial production for these vessels, building 2-3 per year. These are very capable multi-purpose/role frigates that will provide strong escort capabilities to the PLANs capital vessels like the
Type 071 LPD Class and particularly their new
PLAN aircraft carrier.
