The Mexican Army is one of the primary pillars of national security in Mexico, with a focus on internal security and combating organized crime, particularly in the context of the drug war that escalated in 2006. The army is under civilian leadership through the Presidency and the Ministry of National Defense, comprising the Mexican Army, the Mexican Air Force, and the National Guard, which cooperates with the army in internal security operations. Active personnel number approximately 200,000, with around 80,000 reservists, and the Air Force includes roughly 11,000 personnel.
The Mexican Army’s ground forces are equipped with a medium range of military hardware, including light and medium armored personnel carriers, multipurpose armored vehicles, a limited number of main battle tanks, and light to medium field artillery. The Air Force operates light attack aircraft, transport and reconnaissance planes, as well as light and attack helicopters, providing limited air support to ground troops. This reflects the army’s focus on internal security rather than large-scale conventional warfare.
In recent years, the Mexican Army has updated some armored vehicles and aircraft and improved battlefield communications and command systems, although it still lacks advanced offensive capabilities seen in major global militaries. Troops are strategically deployed along the northern border with the United States and the southern border with Central America, allowing rapid response to security operations, monitoring smuggling and illegal migration, and providing disaster relief support.
Despite limited heavy equipment and air combat capability, the Mexican Army has extensive experience in countering armed gangs and organized crime. Its nationwide deployment and logistical infrastructure enhance operational effectiveness. While its main focus is internal security, the army remains a well-structured and disciplined force, playing a vital role in maintaining Mexico’s stability and national security.
