Russia wants to give more Kamov Ka-32T helicopters to South Korea as payment for its debt.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new Russian government owed South Korea $2.24 billion as of 2003.
It has gradually paid back its debt over the years with various weapon systems, such as T-80U main battle tank, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle, Ka-32 helicopters, and etc.
Russia still owes South Korea about $420 million from this particular agreement as of 2019. The Russian government recently proposed that it wants to repay part of this amount in the form of Ka-32T firefighting helicopters.
South Korea is currently the largest operator of KA-32 outside of Russia with its fleet of 60+ aircraft and operates a Kamov-certified maintenance & overhaul center. KA-32 and its variants are operated by the Air Force, Coast Guard, and Forest Service.
