he United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union could have a major impact on Europe's plans to design, develop, and manufacture the next generation of combat aircraft, Airbus Defence and Space (DS) chief executive Dirk Hoke has warned.

Speaking to Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper on 31 March, Hoke said that, with the company currently working with the German government to define its Future Combat Air System (FCAS) requirements under the Next-Generation Weapon System (NGWS) future fighter programme, and France and the United Kingdom carrying out their own preliminary studies for the project, the Brexit decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union could be "significant".

"With regards to the United Kingdom, the next two years and the course of Brexit will have a significant impact on the decision of whether or not [the country chooses] to be involved [in NGWS]," he noted.

The UK decision on being involved in NGWS would be highly important to the overall success of the project as Europe can no longer realistically afford to develop multiple fighter types as it has done previously. It must pool its resources rather than set them against each other, as was the most recent case with the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and Saab Gripen platforms

Germany, Spain, and France/United Kingdom are all currently engaged in different future fighter projects that are all confusingly named FCAS, although it is the German effort to field a replacement for the Panavia Tornado in the 2035 timeframe, which is most likely to field a near-term solution that could be leveraged into a wider pan-European fighter (the Spanish FCAS concept has yet to be defined, but is billed as being "a system of systems"). Besides the timelines being much shorter than the French/UK FCAS project that is geared towards the 2040s, the Airbus DS NGWS/German FCAS effort is geared towards a manned platform, and it should be easier to develop than the unmanned French/UK FCAS.

Germany will not be able to make a truly alternative plane without the European partnership, and the British partnership, however, will not come out with a better plane alone.
